Pass To The Moving Target

The partner keeps walking between two gates. The player waits for a clear target and passes to their feet.

How to set it up
CONTROL THE NEXT ACTION

A simple setup view for this drill.

Setup

Put two markers five metres apart. The partner walks between them and shows a foot when ready. The player passes along the ground, then follows the pass with a few steps.

Steps

  1. The partner walks slowly between the markers.
  2. Player checks the target and waits for the foot to show.
  3. Pass along the ground to the partner's front foot.
  4. Follow the pass, receive the return, and reset.
  5. Swap roles for the final round.

Coaching points

  • Look before you kick.
  • Pass to the foot, not the space behind it.
  • Use the inside of the foot.
  • Move after the pass, even if it was not perfect.

Common mistakes

  • Passing before the partner is ready.
  • Trying to hit the ball hard.
  • Standing still after the pass.
  • Making the partner walk too quickly.

Make it easier

Keep the partner still and use a wide target gate.

Make it harder

Let the partner change direction after the player's first touch or add a passive defender.

How to know it is working

The player waits for a clear target, makes a pass the partner can receive, and moves after it.

Safety

Keep the walking lane clear and use short passes until both players are comfortable.
