A simple setup view for this drill.
Setup
Create a tight possession square with three or four players outside and one defender inside. The receiving player must scan before the ball arrives and support the next pass immediately.
Steps
- Move the ball around the outside players.
- Scan both shoulders before receiving.
- Play away from the defender when possible.
- Support at a new angle after the pass.
- Rotate the defender on a set time or interception.
Coaching points
- Scan before the pass, not after it.
- Receive side-on when the picture allows.
- Play the pass with the correct weight.
- Move early enough to give the next player a clear option.
Common mistakes
- Standing behind the defender.
- Receiving square and needing extra touches.
- Passing hard without purpose.
- Adding intensity without enough recovery.
Make it easier
Use a larger square and allow unlimited touches.
Make it harder
Use two touches, add a second defender, or score a point for a split pass.
How to know it is working
The group keeps possession while players scan, support, and play forward when the picture opens.
Safety
Manage work-to-rest ratios and avoid adding pressure before the group is technically warm.
