Adult Recreational 4v4 Play

Short 4v4 rounds give adults plenty of touches, simple decisions, and enough recovery to keep the game enjoyable.

How to set it up
CONTROL THE NEXT ACTION

A simple setup view for this drill.

Setup

Mark a small pitch with two goals at each end. Play four-minute rounds. A team gets an extra point for completing three passes before scoring, but the game should keep moving.

Steps

  1. Warm up with two minutes of passing and movement.
  2. Play a four-minute round with normal rules.
  3. Add the three-pass bonus for the next round.
  4. Rest for two minutes and change teams or positions.
  5. Finish with a free round.

Coaching points

  • Move after passing.
  • Give the player on the ball two options.
  • Recover together when possession is lost.
  • Keep the game enjoyable and the rounds short.

Common mistakes

  • Making the pitch too large.
  • Playing through tiredness.
  • Adding too many rules.
  • Treating a recreational game like a fitness test.

Make it easier

Use larger goals and allow unlimited touches.

Make it harder

Add a touch limit only for the team that has had time to recover.

How to know it is working

Players get more touches, offer support, and keep making decisions late in the session.

Safety

Warm up, agree contact rules, and stop for pain or dizziness rather than pushing through it.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
