A simple setup view for this drill.
Setup
Make a square with a support player on each end and a defender near the receiver. The receiver checks the shoulders, then turns if the far side is open or plays back if it is blocked.
Steps
- Receiver checks both shoulders.
- Feeder passes into the square.
- Defender applies light pressure from behind.
- Turn through the open side or pass back to the feeder.
- Rotate the receiver and defender.
Coaching points
- Scan before the pass.
- Protect the ball with the body.
- Do not turn just to prove you can.
- A safe pass back is a good decision.
Common mistakes
- Turning into the defender.
- Receiving square and flat-footed.
- Adding full pressure too soon.
- Judging only the result instead of the choice.
Make it easier
Remove the defender and call the open side before the pass.
Make it harder
Let the defender press from different angles or limit the receiver to two touches.
How to know it is working
The receiver sees the pressure, protects the ball, and chooses a sensible next pass or turn.
Safety
Keep contact light and use a level surface with room around the square.
