Dribble Change Of Direction Gates

A close-control drill that teaches players to slow down, change direction, and accelerate into space.

How to set it up
SLOW, TURNACCELERATE

Dribble to the first gate, slow before the turn, then accelerate through the second gate with the ball close.

Setup

Make two gates five metres apart and place a turning marker beside each gate. The player dribbles through one gate, slows down, turns, and attacks the other gate.

Steps

  1. Dribble toward the first gate with small touches.
  2. Slow down before the turning marker.
  3. Use the inside or outside of the foot to change direction.
  4. Accelerate for three touches after the turn.
  5. Repeat with both feet.

Coaching points

  • Slow down before the turn.
  • Keep the ball within one step.
  • Use the body to sell the change of direction.
  • Accelerate only after the ball is secure.

Common mistakes

  • Taking the turn at full speed.
  • Knocking the ball too far ahead.
  • Using only the dominant foot.
  • Making the course too tight for the player's age.

Make it easier

Widen the gates and let the player walk the turn before dribbling it.

Make it harder

Add a passive defender or call the turning foot late.

How to know it is working

The player can change direction without losing the ball and can accelerate for three controlled touches afterward.

Safety

Use flat markers and avoid sharp turns on slippery ground.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
