A simple setup view for this drill.
Setup
Place three coloured gates around the receiver. Start with slow passes and call the colour early. The receiver opens the body and takes the ball toward the named gate.
Steps
- Receiver checks both shoulders before the pass.
- Feeder passes at a manageable speed.
- Call a colour while the ball travels.
- Take the first touch toward that gate.
- Pass back and change the starting angle.
Coaching points
- Look before the ball arrives.
- Open the hips when possible.
- Let the first touch travel into space.
- Make the decision early enough to act on it.
Common mistakes
- Calling a colour without moving toward it.
- Taking the first touch straight back.
- Making the pass too hard.
- Using the drill as a memory test instead of a football action.
Make it easier
Use two gates and call the colour before the pass.
Make it harder
Call late or add a passive defender behind the receiver.
How to know it is working
The receiver looks, chooses the gate, and takes a playable first touch away from the feeder.
Safety
Keep the defender passive and leave space beyond each gate.
