A simple setup view for this drill.
Setup
Set a start line, a speed line, and a stop line 8-12 metres apart. The player accelerates between the first two markers, then slows the ball before the final line.
Steps
- Carry the ball slowly to the speed line.
- Push the ball into space and accelerate for three touches.
- Brake before the stop line with smaller touches.
- Stop the ball under control.
- Repeat in the opposite direction.
Coaching points
- Push the ball into space only when it is safe.
- Lean forward while accelerating.
- Lower the body before braking.
- Finish balanced, not stretched after the ball.
Common mistakes
- Pushing the ball too far.
- Trying to brake at full stride.
- Using speed without a clear space.
- Repeating until tiredness ruins the touch.
Make it easier
Walk the first round and use a wider stop zone.
Make it harder
Add a defender who gives a visual cue for the acceleration line.
How to know it is working
The player can change pace without losing the ball and can stop inside the final zone with control.
Safety
Use a dry, level surface and full recovery between fast repetitions.
