Pivot Clock

A beginner footwork drill where the child lands, freezes, and pivots to different clock positions before passing or protecting the ball.

A simple setup view for this drill.

Setup

Place markers like 12, 3, 6, and 9 on a clock around the child. The player lands in a jump stop, keeps one pivot foot still, and turns to face the called marker.

Steps

  1. Start with the ball held securely.
  2. Land in a small two-foot jump stop.
  3. Call a clock number such as 3 or 9.
  4. Keep one foot planted and pivot to face the marker.
  5. Protect the ball, pass, or reset.

Coaching points

  • Freeze before pivoting.
  • Keep the pivot foot quiet.
  • Turn the shoulders with the hips.
  • Protect the ball after the turn.

Common mistakes

  • Sliding the pivot foot.
  • Turning before the landing is balanced.
  • Holding the ball away from the body.
  • Calling positions too quickly.

Make it easier

Remove the jump stop and practise one slow pivot at a time.

Make it harder

Add a dribble before the stop, a pass after the pivot, or a defender who stays passive.

How to know it is working

The child can land, hold one pivot foot still, and turn to a called position without taking an extra step.

Safety

Use a dry surface and small turns. Stop if the child twists the knee or slips while pivoting.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
