Video: Hoop Group Skills Drill of the Week - Jump Stop / Pivot / Pass by Hoop Group
Clear A Small Lane
You do not need a court for footwork. You need a dry surface, enough space for two steps, and nothing nearby that the child can trip over.
Land Before You Teach
Start with Jump Stop Freeze. Walk forward, land on two feet, hold the ball, and freeze. That pause is the point.
Add One Pivot
Once the landing is quiet, call a direction and let the child pivot slowly. One foot stays planted. The rest of the body turns around it.
Pass After Balance
Use a wall or parent target after the pivot. If the pass happens before balance, travelling comes back quickly.
Keep The Reps Short
Footwork gets sloppy when a child is tired. Three clean sequences are better than twelve rushed ones.
Use Game Words Later
Do not start by explaining every rule. First let the child feel land, freeze, pivot, pass. The rule makes more sense after the body knows it.
Common questions
Can basketball footwork improve at home?
Yes. Jump stops, pivots, balance, and passing after a stop can all improve in a small safe space.
Should the child practise with a ball?
Start without a dribble if the feet are confused. Add the ball once the landing and pivot are calmer.
