Winger Receive, Drive, And Finish

A wide-player drill that connects receiving on the touchline, carrying into space, and choosing a cross or finish.

How to set it up
WIDE STARTDRIVE INSIDEFINAL ACTION

Receive wide, carry inside with a forward first touch, then choose the finish or final pass.

Setup

Mark a wide starting lane and an inside finishing gate. The feeder plays into the winger's path, who receives forward, drives inside, and finishes through the target or across a small goal.

Steps

  1. Start wide and check the shoulder before the feed.
  2. Receive forward rather than stopping on the line.
  3. Carry the ball inside with two or three controlled touches.
  4. Choose a low finish or pass across the target.
  5. Switch sides so both feet get a turn.

Coaching points

  • See the space before receiving.
  • First touch forward when the lane is clear.
  • Change speed after moving inside.
  • Look up before choosing the finish.

Common mistakes

  • Receiving with the ball behind the body.
  • Staying on the line after the first touch.
  • Taking too many touches inside.
  • Crossing or shooting without looking at the target.

Make it easier

Widen the lane, remove the defender, and use a large target gate.

Make it harder

Add a recovering defender or require a first-time cross after the inside carry.

How to know it is working

The winger receives forward, enters the inside lane, and makes a clear final action without losing the ball.

Safety

Use one active ball at a time and keep the finishing lane clear of people collecting balls.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
