Goalkeeper Distribution Gates

A goalkeeper distribution drill for choosing a safe target and starting the next attack with the feet or hands.

How to set it up
DISTRIBUTION GATESECURE, SCAN, PLAY

Secure the ball, scan for the target, then roll or pass through a clear distribution gate.

Setup

Place three gates at different angles outside the penalty area. The goalkeeper receives a back pass or collects a ball, scans, then chooses the safest open gate for the next pass or roll.

Steps

  1. Receive or collect the ball and secure it.
  2. Look at all three target gates.
  3. Choose the safest target rather than the furthest one.
  4. Roll, throw, or pass through the gate.
  5. Reset and change the target.

Coaching points

  • Secure the ball before looking up.
  • Scan before releasing it.
  • Choose accuracy before distance.
  • Move after distribution to support the next action.

Common mistakes

  • Releasing without looking.
  • Choosing the longest pass automatically.
  • Passing while off balance.
  • Standing still after the distribution.

Make it easier

Use two gates and allow the goalkeeper to name the target before receiving.

Make it harder

Add a passive pressing player or make one gate close after the first touch.

How to know it is working

The goalkeeper can secure the ball, identify an open target, and distribute accurately without panic.

Safety

Keep the pressing player passive until the goalkeeper is comfortable securing the ball.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
