Move in short steps between the markers, then set the feet before the next service arrives.
Setup
Place a centre marker and two side markers in front of the goal. The goalkeeper moves between them with short steps while the server waits for the set before rolling the ball.
Steps
- Start at the centre marker in the ready position.
- Move with short side steps to the called marker.
- Set the feet before the server rolls the ball.
- Make the save and secure the ball.
- Return to the centre and repeat.
Coaching points
- Do not cross the feet during the first rounds.
- Set before the ball is struck.
- Keep the chest facing the ball.
- Move the body behind low saves when possible.
Common mistakes
- Arriving with feet still moving.
- Turning the shoulders away from the ball.
- Diving when a step would work.
- Moving too far across the goal.
Make it easier
Remove the ball and practise the movement and set shape first.
Make it harder
Call the side late or add a second low roll after the first save.
How to know it is working
The goalkeeper arrives balanced, sets before the service, and makes the save without falling across the line.
Safety
Keep services low and controlled. Avoid repeated diving on hard ground.
