Goalkeeper Ready Position And Catches

A beginner goalkeeper drill for setting the feet, presenting the hands, and catching gentle shots at chest height.

How to set it up
READY POSITIONGENTLE SERVICE

The goalkeeper starts balanced, sets the feet, and receives gentle chest-height service with the hands presented early.

Setup

Use a small goal or make a two-marker target. The goalkeeper starts in a balanced ready position and the server rolls or gently throws the ball to the chest and stomach area.

Steps

  1. Set the feet just wider than the hips.
  2. Bend the knees and keep the hands in front.
  3. Watch the ball from the server's hands or foot.
  4. Catch with soft hands and bring the ball to the body.
  5. Reset the feet before the next service.

Coaching points

  • Stay balanced on the balls of the feet.
  • Hands meet the ball in front of the body.
  • Catch first, then secure the ball.
  • Reset after every save.

Common mistakes

  • Standing flat-footed.
  • Reaching with one hand for an easy ball.
  • Catching with stiff arms.
  • Throwing the ball away before the body is secure.

Make it easier

Use rolls and underarm throws from close range.

Make it harder

Add a small side step before the service or vary the chest and stomach height.

How to know it is working

The goalkeeper sets quickly, catches most gentle services cleanly, and returns to the ready position without rushing.

Safety

Use soft, controlled services. Do not strike hard shots at a young or inexperienced goalkeeper.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
