1v1 Channel Attack

A small 1v1 game that gives an attacker a clear decision: protect, change direction, or run through the gate.

How to set it up
ATTACKERDEFENDERSCORING GATE

Attack the defender's front foot, change speed, and carry the ball through the far scoring gate.

Setup

Create a channel with a scoring gate at the far end. The attacker starts with the ball and the defender begins a few steps away so the first rounds are about choosing an action, not winning a collision.

Steps

  1. Attacker starts by carrying the ball toward the defender.
  2. Use a change of speed or direction to create a route.
  3. Score by dribbling through the far gate.
  4. Defender wins by stopping the ball or forcing it out.
  5. Switch roles after five attacks.

Coaching points

  • Attack the defender's front foot.
  • Change speed after the move.
  • Keep the ball close enough for a second action.
  • A safe reset is better than a forced dribble.

Common mistakes

  • Running straight into the defender.
  • Doing a move without changing speed.
  • Stopping after beating the defender.
  • Making the channel too narrow.

Make it easier

Start the defender further away and make the scoring gate wider.

Make it harder

Allow the defender to start closer or add a recovery defender behind the attacker.

How to know it is working

The attacker can identify a side, change speed, and reach the gate on some attempts without losing control.

Safety

Keep contact controlled and use a dry, level surface.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
