Give And Go Gates

A two-player passing drill that connects a clean pass with the movement that follows it.

How to set it up
PASSRUN AROUNDRETURN PASS

Pass into the partner, move around the marker, and receive the return pass through the next gate.

Setup

Create a starting gate and a second gate several metres ahead. The passer plays into the partner, runs around the outside marker, and receives the return pass through the next gate.

Steps

  1. Pass into the partner's front foot.
  2. Move immediately around the outside marker.
  3. Show a clear angle for the return pass.
  4. Receive through the second gate and stop the ball.
  5. Switch the starting side after five repetitions.

Coaching points

  • Pass then move, without admiring the pass.
  • Run at an angle rather than straight at the partner.
  • Make the return pass into the runner's path.
  • Keep the first touch connected to the next action.

Common mistakes

  • Moving before the pass is secure.
  • Running behind the partner's line of sight.
  • Passing to feet when the runner needs space.
  • Turning the drill into a race.

Make it easier

Remove the second gate and allow the runner to stop the return pass before playing again.

Make it harder

Add a passive defender or require the runner to finish with the weaker foot.

How to know it is working

The pair can complete six give-and-go actions with the runner arriving on time for the return.

Safety

Keep the running lane clear and reduce the distance if players start colliding or lunging.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
