How to set it up
CONTROL THE NEXT ACTION

A simple setup view for this drill.

Setup

A wide player carries toward the end line and cuts the ball back to a runner arriving near the edge of the box. Start with a walking run so the timing is easy to see.

Steps

  1. Runner checks the shoulder and starts outside the scoring area.
  2. Wide player carries toward the end line.
  3. Runner arrives late for the cutback.
  4. Open the body and place the finish.
  5. Rotate the wide player, runner, and feeder.

Coaching points

  • Arrive, do not wait in the box.
  • See the ball before choosing the finish.
  • Place the shot before chasing power.
  • Stay balanced after the strike.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving too early.
  • Standing behind a defender's line.
  • Taking a wild first-time swing.
  • Sending the cutback too hard for the runner.

Make it easier

Allow the runner to take one touch before finishing.

Make it harder

Add a passive defender or require the runner to choose between two target zones.

How to know it is working

The runner arrives as the ball comes back and can finish toward a chosen target with balance.

Safety

Use one active ball, clear the goal area, and keep rebounds away from the next runner.
