Goalkeeper Angle And Set

Move with the ball, find the line between it and the goal, then set the feet before the controlled shot.

How to set it up
CONTROL THE NEXT ACTION

A simple setup view for this drill.

Setup

Put two markers a few metres apart in front of goal. The goalkeeper moves with the ball from side to side, adjusts the angle, and sets before the server takes a controlled shot or roll.

Steps

  1. Start in the middle of the goal.
  2. Server carries the ball slowly to one side.
  3. Goalkeeper moves to keep the ball and goal lined up.
  4. Set the feet before the shot.
  5. Reset and work from the other side.

Coaching points

  • Move as the ball moves.
  • Stay between the ball and the middle of the goal.
  • Set before the strike.
  • Use small steps near the final position.

Common mistakes

  • Standing too far toward one post.
  • Crossing the feet at the set.
  • Diving before the angle is right.
  • Taking shots faster than the goalkeeper can read.

Make it easier

Use a rolled ball and let the goalkeeper stop the play before the shot.

Make it harder

Allow the server to pass across the goal or add a second target.

How to know it is working

The goalkeeper arrives on the correct line, sets in balance, and sees the shot early.

Safety

Use controlled service and suitable goalkeeping surfaces. Do not add diving just to make the drill look harder.
