Cone Tap Dribble Race

A short dribbling game where kids tap safe markers in order while keeping the ball alive and stopping under control.

How to set it up
CONTROL THE NEXT ACTION

A simple setup view for this drill.

Setup

Place three markers in a triangle a few steps apart. The player dribbles to each marker, taps it with the free hand, then returns to the middle before the next call.

Steps

  1. Start in the middle with a controlled dribble.
  2. Call a marker number or colour.
  3. Dribble to the marker and tap it with the free hand.
  4. Return to the middle and freeze for one second.
  5. Repeat with the other hand when ready.

Coaching points

  • Keep the dribble beside the body.
  • Slow down near the marker.
  • Freeze before the next call.
  • Use the weaker hand for short rounds.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching so far that balance disappears.
  • Letting the race become uncontrolled running.
  • Making markers too far apart.
  • Ignoring the freeze in the middle.

Make it easier

Use two markers and let the child walk the route.

Make it harder

Call colours faster, add a left-hand-only round, or require a jump stop in the middle.

How to know it is working

The child can reach the called marker, keep the dribble alive, and return to a balanced middle position.

Safety

Use soft, flat markers and keep the court or driveway clear of obstacles.

Next practice

Pick one short session. Stop while the child still wants another turn.
